Musky Shop Northwoods Fishing Report: Early August 2025

We hope everybody is having a great summer and finding some time to go fishing. Here in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, we are so blessed to have such a beautiful place in the country to fish and fish for Muskies. In my opinion, Northern Wisconsin, especially Oneida and Vilas counties, is the best place to fish for Muskies from anywhere in the world. There are several hundred lakes with a multitude of species to fish for, including our favorite Muskies.
Why Oneida and Vilas Counties Stand Out
Of course, there are a lot of other places to fish for Muskies outside of the Northwoods; however, here in Oneida and Vilas counties, you can always find a place to fish no matter what the wind or boat traffic is doing. To me, this is an incredible area to live and fish.
As for fishing, Musky fishing has been outstanding. We had a couple of days where our water temps crept to 80-ish degrees; however, like always, a cold front moved through, and our water temps came right back down and are now in the mid-70s. A lot of Muskies, as well as many other species of fish, are being caught in the deep weed edge, grass edge, or structural edge. They have been there for a few weeks now and most likely will stay there until the water temps begin to drop in early fall, then most species will move shallow until turnover.
Best Baits for Musky Fishing
A variety of baits are working. Soft Plastics, Crankbaits, Jerkbaits, Bucktails, and Surface baits are all being productive. Here are some recommended products:
Fishing Tips for Success
Consider positioning your boat outside of the weedline or structural edge and cast up to cover the edge completely. If you're targeting something other than Muskies, most of those species will be in this same location. Just be prepared to slide up a bit or out a bit with your boat position as the weather dictates.
