If you’re heading North this summer, make note of this gem nestled in the heart of Iron County. Lake of the Falls is a 297-acre pristine lake with excellent fishing potential and never-ending vistas. Located near Mercer, Wisconsin, this scenic lake is a must-visit for anglers and outdoor enthusiasts. If you're traveling from Minocqua, expect a 45-minute drive North West, approximately 40 miles. The journey takes you through the beautiful Northwoods, offering glimpses of Wisconsin’s breathtaking scenery, passing a host of other bodies of water that also deserve to be explored.

Lake Layout and Fishability

Lake of the Falls is moderately clear, making it an excellent fishing destination. Its max depth of 23 feet and sandy/gravelly bottom structure make it particularly suitable for angling compared to other lakes in the area. The lake’s irregular shape creates natural pockets and structures that attract muskies and their forage. With ample weed beds, submerged timber, and rocky points, anglers have plenty of casting opportunities and the possibility of landing a trophy is unlimited.

In order to maximize your chances of landing a monster.  Make sure you’re tackle box is packed full of options to keep those Lake of the Falls fish guessing.  Recommendations are:

  • Bucktails with black and chartreuse skirts
  • Topwater lures like walk-the-dog style baits
  • Soft plastics in natural perch or walleye colors
  • Crankbaits in firetiger or gold hues

The best time to target muskies is early morning or late afternoon when the sun starts to slant, when they are most active near weed edges and drop-offs.  Prime ambush spots are plentiful so make sure you’re lined up on great structure when the bite pops off. The Turtle River, which flows through the lake, provides fresh, oxygenated water, attracting plenty of baitfish and our favorite predators.

Family-Friendly Activities and Recreation

Beyond fishing, Lake of the Falls offers plenty of activities for families:

  • Lake of the Falls County Park features picnic areas, scenic overlooks, and a pavilion.
  • Camping is available at three separate campgrounds, with options for electrical and non-electrical sites.
  • Hiking and ATV trails provide adventure for outdoor enthusiasts.
  • The 10-foot waterfall at the park is a must-see for visitors.
