We hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful Christmas season and is off to a strong start in the new year!
Ice fishing in the Minocqua, Wisconsin area has been exceptional so far this season. Current ice conditions are very solid, with most lakes boasting 20 inches or more of safe, reliable ice—perfect for safe and productive outings on the water.
Crappie and Panfish Ice Fishing in Minocqua
Crappies and other panfish are holding strong in the 6- to 12-foot range across most lakes. Live bait options are producing excellent results, including:
- Jumbo Wax Worms
- Red Spikes
- White Spikes
- Crappie Minnows
- XL Fatheads
For artificial presentations, soft plastics continue to shine. Top choices include:
Walleye Ice Fishing Tips: Deep Clear Lakes vs. Flowages and Shallow Lakes
On deep, clear lakes, good numbers of walleyes are found in weeds or along weed edges in the 10- to 20-foot range. Live bait remains highly effective here:
- Large Pike/Walleye Suckers
- Large Golden Shiners
On flowages and shallow, dark-water lakes, walleyes are holding a bit shallower—typically in the 6- to 15-foot range—often near weeds or wood cover. Successful baits in these systems include:

- Large Golden Shiners
Northern Pike Fishing Report: Strong Action in Weed Beds
Pike fishing has also been very good. Most northern pike are positioned in weeds in the 6- to 12-foot range, with larger specimens often patrolling the outer weed edges in slightly deeper water. Proven live bait choices include:
