Saturday, January 22 - Lakeland Union High School Ice Fishing team with the help of their coaches and sponsors were able to organize the first invitational tournament held this year on Lake Minocqua.  The Lakeland Invite tournament consisted of 10 teams from various Wisconsin High Schools with up to 10 students per team.  The tournament included multiple categories for winning teams and individuals: 6 species total combined inches (Crappie, Bluegill, Perch, Northern Pike, Large and Small Mouth Bass) and size class winner for each species.

Upon meeting for tournament rules and regulations, the 10 High School fishing teams departed for Lake Minocqua to start their day of ice fishing.  Competing teams included Three Lakes/Phelps, Lakeland, Wausaukee, Medford, Wausau West, Rhinelander, Edgerton, Wisconsin Rapids, Owen-Withee, and Goodman.  Each fish was caught, photoed, and released for the purposes of recording accuracy.

Sponsored by both Musky Shop and St. Croix rods, the teams battled it out for gift cards and goodie bags provided by the Musky Shop as a reward for their successful day.

The following team mentions were awarded with top prizes for the day:

1st Place: Three Lakes/Phelps w/ Coach Tyler Lorenz and Coach Jason Pertile

2nd Place: Lakeland w/ Coaches Matt Dassow, Jack Jurries, and Tom Oestreich

3rd Place: Wausaukee w/ Coach Grant Russ

Individual size class rewards were awarded for all six species categories as well. Lakeland Invite hopes to kick of the season next year with an even larger group of Wisconsin Ice Fishing Teams to promote the sport.  Musky Shop owner Jim Stewart was delighted to host this year and can't wait for another chance in 2023.
