Musky Shop Fishing Report - Early October
Another couple of weeks go by and everything seems to change at the drop of a hat for fishing success. Finding muskies or other species can become a hassle, but success puts a smile on every fisherman's face. This week, multiple lake reports will have you lined up on your targets, no matter the species.
Jim, owner of Musky Shop, reports back on this weeks success from chasing muskies up in to the shallows during some unseasonably warm air temps in the North Woods. Water temps hover in the low to mid 60's in the deep clear lakes of Onieda, Valas, Douglas (MN), and Cass Counties (MN). Slow to medium speed casting seems to be doing the trick to trigger strikes in 5-15' of water. Clear strikes are more successful with natural colored baits: perch, walleye, sucker, etc. Some successful lures: Surface baits (Top Raiders, Smitty Slaptails), Bucktails (Shumway Flasher, Spanky Baits) and Big Fork Sand Cats.
Fred, North Woods guide, reports back with great success in nailing down the crappie bite in Vilas County by using plastics in 24' of water. The bite tended to be more successful on morning trips and 63 degree water temps did not discourage the crappie from taking Mini Mites or Kalin's Crappie Scrubs. Colors like blue/white or white/pink got the fish moving. Fred also reports back on the walleye bite on a scouting trip to Vilas County Lake. Finding walleye deep in 32-34' of water and being attracted to live bait during the current weather trends.
As always, please stop by Musky Shop to supply your trip to the North Woods. Ask one of our many guides behind the counter direct you toward the best gear for the conditions and successful waterways that are delivering the most muskies or other catch. Musky Shop carries baits for targeting walleye, crappie, bass and pike. The live bait selection is always fully stocked and will help you if October takes a turn for cold fronts. Look forward to our late October update!
