Musky Shop Northwoods Fishing Report: Early March 2024
Hey everyone, greetings from Minocqua, Wisconsin!
I hope everyone has had a great winter as we are now approaching spring. The fishing has been pretty good here in the Northwoods. We are entering a season of late ice. Most of our lakes are in the 5-to-7-inch range, so you’re definitely going to want to use extreme caution, as you head out. Most of Oneida and Vilas County Lakes feature the same ice levels, with the Flowages offering a little less, so you’re going to keep close tabs on ice travel wherever you go.
Our gamefish season has ended, so primarily you may target crappie, perch, and panfish in the Northwoods. This bite has actually been great. One of the young, high school guys who works at our shop took a late evening trip with friends on Wednesday, catching 75 crappies, 20 of which were over 13”. Most were returned for other anglers, but they were glad to keep enough for a meal or two. These young anglers were using tip-downs with crappie minnows, rosies, and waxies. Most of the bigger fish were even hitting fatheads.
If you’re coming up to the Northwoods with intentions of fishing for crappies and perch, please stop by the Musky Shop as we have really fresh live bait: crappie minnows, rosies, fatheads, and anything you might need. With the ice depths, it’s important to keep up to date on the best and safest locations to stop and use your tip downs. Most of the locations of the crappies and panfish have been situated over deep green weeds in the 10 – 12-foot depth. They have also been located near some wood.
