Northwood's Fishing Report: Late January

Northwood's Fishing Report: Late January

James Stewart January 21, 2022

Ice fishing in the Northwoods has been fantastic. A lot of favorable reports on walleye fishing and panfish in the region.  Northern pike fishing has been quite productive as well among the locals who know where to go. Northern Pike have been mostly weed related catches to the 5'-12' Tip Ups with Northern Pike minnows, or large Golden Shiners have been working well. Pike are delicious any time of year but are especially good caught through the ice.

Ice conditions are 16" and deeper on all of the lakes. Currently, there aren't too many slushy areas on the lakes, so travel is quite easy when pulling a sled or ice shanty. The beautiful Willow Flowage has an actual road plowed on the ice and is awesome for travel. The plowed road goes all the way to Indian Bay for those who wish to go out a bit further.!
Our guide staff member Fred Palermo caught some really nice Crappies the last few days. Crappies have been caught using Rosy Red minnows, Crappie minnows, wax worms, red and white spikes. Freddy has been using tip downs, and also jigging Tungsten jigs.
Walleye fishing has been a notable favorite this January. Locals are finding that bite has been the best early to mid morning then again in the late afternoon.
Weed lines have been a good location to find walleyes. Walleye suckers, Medium and Golden Shines have been working really well. Tip Up fishing is always fun and productive with a group of friends or jigging by yourself can be a great way to relax and enjoy the day fishing Walleyes.  And of course, best furry friends, like Gus here, are always welcome!!
